Think Talk: Behind Their Screens: The risks of social media for children and potential solutions

This talk will explore the research on the links between social media use and its negative effects on children’s and teenager’s well-being. It will address the controversies and limitations within this field of study, highlighting the need for cautious interpretation of research findings and media reports. The discussion will also examine the mismatch between social media use and the developing teenage brain, while presenting potential solutions, ranging from individual strategies to systemic changes, all with the ultimate goal of promoting youth wellbeing.
About Dr Samantha Marsh, Senior Research Fellow, at the University of Auckland
Samantha is a senior research fellow in the Department of General Practice and Primary Care and has been part of the School of Population Health at the University of Auckland since 2016. Her research centers on child and youth health and well-being, with a particular emphasis on parent-child relationships and how screen use can interfere with these relationships.
