Think Talk: The Universe in 60 Minutes!
Tuesday 13 May 7:30 PM - 8:30 PM
In this talk we will start our journey at the formation of the universe in the big-bang and work our way to the present day looking at the way we see how galaxies, stars and planets are formed and where the elements that make up your body came from. We will also look at some of the more exotic objects in the universe like black holes, neutron stars, white dwarfs and diamond stars. Finally, we look at the European Space Agency mission PLATO, whose goal is to identify exoplanets (planets outside of our own solar system) and review some recent potentially habitable, exo-planet discoveries.
About Dr John Bray, Post-Doctoral research Fellow at the University of Auckland
Dr Bray is at the University of Auckland dong a three a three-year Post-Doctoral position studying X-ray emission from interacting binary star systems. He obtained his PhD from the university of Auckland in 2018 and his thesis was on the impact of supernova kicks on binary star systems containing neutron stars and black holes. He has completed a two-year Post Doctoral research post at The Open University in the UK. He is interested in black holes and neutron stars as well as the search for exoplanets using the planet transit method.
Please register for this talk so we can plan seating for the expected numbers. A small donation on arrival at the door is appreciated.
