This short course provides a comprehensive introduction to the fundamental concepts of algebra and calculus, offering essential skills for tackling a wide range of mathematical problems. Designed for students who wish to build a solid foundation, the course covers basic algebraic operations, linear equations, quadratic equations, polynomials, and rational expressions, before diving into the core principles of calculus.
You’ll learn how to solve algebraic equations, graph linear functions, and understand key concepts such as slopes and intercepts. We will also cover quadratic equations, including factoring and the quadratic formula, and explore the fascinating world of polynomials and rational expressions. In the calculus portion, we will focus on differentiation, teaching you how to determine rates of change, optimise functions, and analyse slopes of curves. We’ll also explore integration, the reverse process, where you'll learn how to find areas under curves and solve accumulation problems.
By the end of this course, you'll have a strong grasp of both algebra and calculus fundamentals, providing you with the tools to approach more advanced mathematical topics and apply these concepts in real-world situations. Whether you're new to these topics or need a refresher, this course will give you the confidence and skills to succeed.
Pen and paper. A scientific calculator. If you don't yet have one and are unsure on what to buy, bring a basic calculator on the first night and ask the tutor for advice.
