In this three hour workshop, you will learn the basics of soap-making and have a chance to make your own soap from scratch, using oils that you can buy in the supermarket. In the theory part you will find out how soap works and you will learn about the cold process method of soap making. Topics covered include colouring and fragrancing your soap, adding other ingredients such as clays and exfoliants to your soaps, natural soap-making, and troubleshooting. During the practical session, you will make a small loaf of soap (500 ml), which is approximately four full sized or eight guest sized bars of soap. All materials and ingredients are included, and each participant will also receive a silicon soap mould that they get to keep. Your course fee includes a materials charge of $25.
A 2 litre icecream container or a bowl with similar volume plus a tea towel. All other materials are provided.
Do these soap products contain palm oil?
No. Tutor Jacqueline confirms that palm oil is not used in any of these products.
Is this 'melt and pour' or making from scratch?
You'll learn to make soap from scratch. Jacqueline will also explain how melt and pour works.
I'm pregnant. Is soap-making safe for me?
Soap making exposes students to ingredients such as essential oils and sodium hydroxide which are classified as irritants. As pregnancy often causes sensitivity to smells, the fumes of these ingredients may be irritating. If you're unsure, consult with your midwife or GP for advice.
What about the colours?
In the basic course, soap is coloured using artificial colours. You can elect to leave these out.
