Sandra Morris is an award winning illustrator and she will introduce you to the world of botanical art using techniques that are a great way to start. You will leave the course not only with new skills but a set of high quality pencils to continue your practice.
You will be looking at flower parts and drawing to scale accurately and professionally with colour pencils and pen and ink stipple.
Course outline
- Presentation showcasing both the history and development of these two very different techniques and looking at some modern practitioners in the botanical art world.
- How to dissect a flower and learn the names of the flower parts.
- How to accurately measure and draw to scale.
- How to use colour pencils with correct undertone layers and using embossing tools and burnishers correctly.
- How to be effective with pen and ink stippling technique- how to capture form and tone with stipple.
- Advice on correct papers to use and art materials brands.
- Outlets as an artist for these two types of techniques.

- Students will learn how to effectively and accurately use colour pencil and pen and ink techniques, capturing form and tone.

- 1 each x 0.03 and 0.05 fine-liner pens- NB These are very fine point pens -Staedtler or uni pin are both good brands.

The tutor will provide a set of 10 high quality colour pencils which you get to take home. The cost of these is included within your course fee.

About your tutor, Sandra Morris
I am an award winning natural history illustrator of children’s books and a keen botanical artist. Part of being a botanical artist is learning how to record flower parts accurately. Correct colour pencil work and pen and ink stipple are good techniques to start off with – the latter also being used predominately for scientific illustration.
