Understanding the causes and effects of the Waikato War is an advantage in understanding the need for, and processes of, the Waitangi Tribunal.
For some sites, there is no vehicle access so some cross-country walking is required. At Whangamarino there are about 90 steep steps up to the Paa site and Redoubt. There is an alternate farm road which is also quite steep. There is also a stile to get over and a short walk through a private farm paddock to a memorial for some British soldiers. There is a public easement in place to allow us to do this.
Comfortable clothing and walking shoes. Stops will be made for comfort and refreshments. Bring your own lunch and water and wallet for any cafe stops if you wish. This tour will depart from, and return to, Selwyn College in Kohimarama, Auckland. We are sorry that we cannot offer any alternative pickup or drop off locations.
I was on the tour on Saturday. Thanks so much for organising this tour. My grateful thanks to Terry and Peter for a very enjoyable and informative trip. Terry gave some very interesting and informative commentary and Peter is a very capable and safe driver who made the trip enjoyable. We visited sites I have longed to stop at over the years and sites I never knew existed. BM October 2022
