Join University of Auckland Professor Nancy November to explore two famous composers, Joseph Haydn and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, through their portrayal in film, including Amadeus.
The course is as much about the composers—their lives, times and music—as it is about how they are represented. In the case of Haydn we consider the documentary In Search of Haydn, looking at how the narrative reinforce stereotypes of the composer genius, even as it seeks to educate. In the case of Mozart we consider a biopic, Amadeus, which, although it presents a narrative designed primarily to engage rather than educate, is cleverly crafted to convey more than a grain of historical truth.

About the tutor
Nancy November is a Professor of Music at the University of Auckland. She holds a PhD in musicology from Cornell University and has written six books about music and culture in Beethoven’s era.
