Organic gardening could be described as growing in harmony with nature, without using synthetic fertilisers, pesticides, herbicides or other such products that upset the balance of the ecosystem. Organic gardening is just a small facet of permaculture which is a philosophy based on working with, rather than against, nature; of careful observation rather than protracted and thoughtless labour; and of looking at plants and animals in all their functions, rather that treating any areas as a single product system. The word permaculture originated in the 1970s and referred to 'permaculture agriculture' but was expanded to also represent permaculture culture to encompass an integrated sustainable system of living. The principles of permaculture apply to how we live our lives wholly and can apply from the smallest garden to large scale systems.
Those interested in adding to existing gardening knowledge, those without gardening knowledge looking to get started in food production at home, those wanting to make positive and sustainable changes to gardening practice and society.
