Explore the beauty of natural dyeing on wool and silk. Participants will learn to prepare the fibre to receive the colour and to extract the colour from natural plants. Through this beautiful and sustainable process each participant will dye wool and a scarf in a variety of colours.
You will go home with your own dyed silk scarf and some dyed wool for future use. You'll also take home course notes about plants to use and learn how to continue natural dyeing at home.
Exact colours provided on the day will depend on the availability of natural materials harvested before the course - it is likely that the class will use eucalyptus for gold, acorns for brown, dyers chamomile for bright yellow. Cochineal will be used for red.
Bring your lunch. We will provide tea and coffee in the staffroom. We ask that you bring gloves, a wooden spoon, a plastic bucket, apron and two old towels. All other course materials are included in the fee.
Students will gain foundation knowledge and skills around fibre preparation, colour extraction, natural dye process, awareness of dye plant materials within the local environment, environment sustainability awareness through the use of natural practices.
Anyone interested in dyeing and/or sustainable and traditional practices. This course is designed for those with no previous experience of natural dyeing.
