    Description

    Tertiary Education Commission (TEC) course fee subsidy

    This course offers a course fee subsidy through funding from the TEC for:  

    • NZ citizens;
    • Those who hold a residency-class visa;
    • Individuals granted refugee status;
    • In some cases spouses of NZ citizens and permanent migrants may also qualify - please contact the office to enquire.

    Conditions:

    • Registrants must be aged 16 years or older.
    • Registrants must not be currently enrolled at a secondary school.
    • You should attend at least 80% of your classes to qualify for a fee subsidy.
    • We need to collect extra information such as age, ethnicity, educational achievement and gender for statistical purposes.
    • You must provide evidence of NZ citizenship, residency or refugee status .

    If you are unable to meet these conditions, please contact the office to discuss your situation. The subsidised course fee is $60.

    About the course

    This is an overview course focusing on the elements that make up digital marketing/a digital presence and what you need to know to start a small online business. 

    We cover a range of different disciplines including business elements such as trademarks, strategies to set pricing and domain (website) names. We also discuss how to approach setting up a basic website. You will be provided with a list of fantastic free and low-cost tools you can use to help you on your journey.

    It is highly recommend to come:

    • With something to take notes (e.g. a pen and notebook, or you can make notes in the booklet provided)
    • Prepared to access email (if possible) - eg a Gmail/iCloud/other hotmail address from an onsite desktop computer: this means ideally being familiar with your username and password to log in.
    • With your lunch. Tea and coffee and water are provided. 

    Expected learning outcomes

    On completion of this course, students should be able to demonstrate a basic understanding of the following:

    • Differences between traditional commerce and e-commerce
    • Considerations with choosing a product or service to sell online
    • The competitive landscape, brand personality and how to conduct market research
    • Assessing one's own skills and what skills are needed
    • Keywords and their importance
    • Choosing an effective domain name for your business, both the business name and a keyword friendly domain name
    • Guidance to develop a website and different options for building/designing it
    • e-Commerce and how to establish an online shop
    • Payment and booking tool options
    • Freight and shipping for online shopping/selling products
    • How to monitor and measure your online business with Google web tools
    • The range of free and low-cost tools and resources you can leverage

    Who should attend A Roadmap to Starting An Online Business

    The course is designed to appeal to people who are contemplating starting an online business from home who need to get an overview of what is involved, and what skills/knowledge are necessary before undertaking such an enterprise. Those with understanding of browsers, Microsoft applications, navigation menus and toolbars will gain more from the course.

    About your tutor

    Karyn Van Dam is a creative professional and experienced course facilitator, with a passion for learning as an adult. She has a diverse business background spanning across public and private sectors, professional services, training and teaching, agile and project work, communications management, marketing and contracting. After many years in the corporate scene, Karyn embarked on a career change to follow her true passion of singing and music. She started her own online vocal coaching studio, which enabled her to have international reach. She now works with singers and songwriters mainly in USA, managing all the different aspects of the business herself. Karyn also works at developing relevant online learning programmes for adults. In more recent years, she also enjoys working in marketing/digital marketing and has developed special interests in Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and User Interface (UI) Design. Karyn also chipped away to complete multiple qualifications, mainly via distance learning whilst working over many years.

    Prerequisites

    Basic understanding of computers, internet browsers (eg Explorer, Chrome, Safari or Firefox) and the use of navigation menus and toolbars is essential. Basic understanding of general Microsoft applications is recommended.
