    Home Portuguese for Travellers

    This is an introductory course designed for people with little or no previous knowledge of Portuguese. In a friendly and supportive environment, you will learn practical vocabulary, basic grammar and pronunciation while developing the confidence to communicate in simple everyday situations.

    Course Outline

    During this course, you will learn how to:

    • Use the Portuguese alphabet and develop basic pronunciation skills
    • Use numbers from 1–100
    • Greet people and say goodbye
    • Introduce yourself and ask someone their name
    • Talk about countries and nationalities
    • Say which languages you speak
    • Talk about professions and occupations
    • Ask and say where someone lives
    • Use the calendar, including days of the week and months of the year
    • Ask and tell the time
    • Talk about the weather
    • Talk about family members
    • Describe people's appearance and basic characteristics
    • Identify and talk about rooms in a house
    • Use essential vocabulary and simple grammatical structures for everyday communication
    • Learn about aspects of Portuguese-speaking cultures

    Expected Learning Outcomes

    By the end of the course, you should be able to communicate using basic Portuguese in a range of familiar situations.

    You will be able to introduce yourself, exchange simple personal information, talk about your family, nationality, profession, languages, home and everyday surroundings, as well as ask and answer simple questions.

    You will also have developed:

    • A foundation of essential Portuguese vocabulary
    • An understanding of basic Portuguese sentence structures
    • Greater confidence with Portuguese pronunciation
    • Basic listening and speaking skills
    • An introduction to the cultures of the Portuguese-speaking world

    Individual progress will depend partly on the amount of revision and practice completed between classes. Students are encouraged to practise Portuguese regularly throughout the eight weeks.

    Our Portuguese tutor creates a fun, practical and welcoming learning environment, with an emphasis on communication and helping beginners feel confident using Portuguese from the very first lessons.

    Course Format

    This is an 8-week hybrid course, consisting of 4 face-to-face classes at Selwyn Community Education and 4 online classes via Zoom.

    Week 3 – Face-to-face at Selwyn
    Week 4 – Online
    Week 5 – Face-to-face at Selwyn
    Week 6 – Online
    Week 7 – Online
    Week 8 – Face-to-face at Selwyn

    The first and final sessions are held face-to-face, allowing students to meet their tutor and classmates in person, establish a strong foundation at the beginning of the course, and finish the programme together in the classroom.
