    Description

    Course Outline

    The course is focused on the art of flash fiction – compact stories told in under 1,000 words – and on the use of sensory detail to create vivid narratives and reveal what remains unsaid.

    Each 1.5-hour lesson pairs one of the five senses with a creative writing craft element, illustrated with short, published examples and followed by guided writing prompts, discussion, and practical exercises.

    Week 1:  Introduction to Flash Fiction and the Five Senses
    Week 2:  Sight & Setting
    Week 3:  Sound & Dialogue
    Week 4:  Taste & Point of View
    Week 5:  Smell & Characterisation
    Week 6:  Touch & Plot
    Week 7:  Editing
    Week 8:  Share your written stories and discuss

    Expected learning outcomes

     The participants will learn:

    • Ways to use sensory imagery to deepen meaning
    • How to craft compelling stories with clarity and economy
    • Techniques for shaping character, setting, dialogue, etc. in very short forms
    • How to revise and edit
    • Confidence in sharing and discussing their work

    About your tutor

    A bilingual writer, creative writing tutor, and music educator with over 30 years of experience, I hold a Master of Creative Writing from the University of Auckland. I write in both English and Bulgarian, with published and award-recognized work spanning flash fiction, short stories, long prose, and poetry. My writing explores sensory experience, belonging, memory, and cross-cultural identity, drawing inspiration from my life across my native Bulgaria, Southern Africa, and now New Zealand.
