Using photographs or home movies, you’ll learn how to shape your story through sound, sequencing, and creative editing techniques that add depth and coherence. Guided step by step, you’ll create a short film that reflects your unique experiences and perspective.
Week 1 – Introduction & Discovery
Explore examples of personal story films. Share your photographs or family
footage and begin mapping themes and threads you want to explore.
Week 2 – Shaping the Story
Create a story map or sequence plan, then start selecting photographs or
clips that resonate with your chosen theme or experience.
Week 3 – Story Structure
Learn some basic story structures to assist you while you are building your
own.
Week 4 – Editing & Layering Meaning
Learn basic editing. Explore sequencing, sound integration, pacing, and
visual layering to build a cohesive and expressive personal story.
Week 5 – Draft Screening & Feedback
Share a rough cut of your personal story film for supportive feedback.
Week 6 – Final Screening & Future Directions
Screen your completed film as a group. Reflect on your creative process
and learn about next steps for extending your project, or archiving other
family materials.
This course is ideal for anyone who wants to explore personal or family
stories through creative visual storytelling. It’s perfect for people with boxes
of old photographs, family movies, or digital archives who would like to
transform them into something meaningful.
No prior filmmaking experience is required.
Participants will need to bring a laptop that they can edit their film on.
If participants want to shoot extra content, they may need a camera or
phone.
