In this immersive one-day workshop, you’ll learn the step-by-step process of transforming archival-quality, pre-ground pigments into vibrant, custom-made art supplies.
Led by an expert in methods once used by the old masters, this hands-on course will teach you how to mix and bind pigments with natural ingredients to create both soft pastels and water based paints. You’ll explore the unique properties of earth pigments and understand how to harness their natural hues to create your own personalised set of natural art materials.
By the end of the day, you’ll leave with your own handmade pastels and a water-based paint, ready to use in your artwork. Whether you're an experienced artist or a curious beginner, this workshop offers a unique opportunity to connect with the raw beauty of natural pigments and enhance your creative practice.
Art materials are provided (a materials charge is included within your course fee), with pigments already ground to ensure you work with non toxic and archival-quality colour from the start.
Your lunch. We'll supply tea and coffee. Bring measuring spoons, an apron, and any paper you may wish to test your pastels on.
Holly Clarke, an eco-artist based in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland, specialises in creating her own paints and pastels using non-toxic earth pigments. Crafted in small batches from high-quality materials sourced in France and Italy, her pigments are free from additives and solvents, and meet archival standards.
After earning scholarships in painting and graphic design during high school, Holly pursued a career in design. Trained as a fashion designer in Florence, Italy, she later became an award-winning graphic and textile designer, collaborating with renowned brands like Citta Design. Eventually, she returned to her first love: painting, drawing inspiration from nature and its organic mediums.
