Description
If you have already attended our Pottery Beginners classes, this Next Steps course will help you extend your skills. You will be encouraged to develop your hand building and sculptural skills including learning about creating handles and spouts for your creations.
Course outline
This course follows a similar format to Pottery Beginners, only the time dedicated to introducing basic skills will instead be spent on some more complex aspects of pot making. Lids and galleries, handles, spouts and feet are important components of teapots and casseroles for example. This course allows time to concentrate on these while further developing the techniques already introduced in Beginners. You will also be encouraged to develop your own hand building and sculptural ideas.
Maximum class size 11 students. We have three wheels available for most classes. Your fee covers basic clay and glazes as well as firing. Bring your own cutting and finishing tools.
Matt is one of New Zealand's top award-winning potters, and is a dedicated and patient teacher.
Who can attend
Students must have strong hand-building skills from either Matt's Pottery Beginners course or have experience at a similar level elsewhere. It should be noted that many experienced students benefit from re-doing Pottery Beginners. That is still a valid alternative, especially for those wanting to reinforce basic techniques.
About our facilities
We are excited to have you join us in our small pottery shed, located next to our kiln room at the back of Selwyn College, for a fun and creative pottery experience. Since the shed can be cold in the winter months, it's essential to dress appropriately to ensure your comfort while you work on your pottery masterpieces. We suggest you layer up, wear a warm top, warm socks, closed shoes or boots, hat and scarf if you particularly feel the cold.
By dressing appropriately for the class, you can fully enjoy the experience without being distracted by the cold weather. We'll have heaters in the shed to make it as comfortable as possible, but dressing warmly will ensure you have a great time learning and creating your pottery pieces
