Description
Come and get creative with a finalist from the NZ Wearable Arts! Join Beatrice Carlson and she will guide you as you design and make your very own extravagant creative adornment to embellish your wardrobe – a combination of jewellery and art. Each piece will measure approximately 25cm x 18cm. Throughout the process you will learn about the wearable art competition and following this you will be guided and encouraged to go through your own process of creating your own WOW piece.
Using perspex, a variety of images, glass cabochons, chains and a selection of interesting and vibrant adornments you will leave the course with your own glorious piece of extravaganza! In the process you will have learned how to work with perspex and have the skills to make more unique and vibrant creations at home.
Expected learning outcomes

- BRING together your own ideas, pieces: let’s talk about it, find the right way to make it work.
- LEARN new techniques on perspex and how to use them together on any other material: carve, print, heat shape.
- MAKE a piece of jewellery, a cameo or something you have in mind.
Course outline
Saturday:
- WOW garments and the evolution from WOW to pieces
- Q & A
- Concept, research, photo, storyboards, sketch....thinking what you want to create. Clarify your ideas with help from the tutor and finalise a plan.
- Work with perspex: carving, melting, prepare a collage for making the art piece on day 2.
Sunday:
- Work individually to make art pieces with support from the tutor
- Clear away
What to bring
Your lunch. Photos or images that you may wish to use in your jewellery piece (for creating a collage) and any extra materials you may wish to incorporate. This could include broken jewellery, earrings, special beads, small mementos or adornments no longer used. Bring an apron or protective garment. Bring your smart phone to do pics of your mockup. All other materials (perspex, cameo and glass cabochons, chain, jewellery findings, beads, non-toxic glue, equipment) are provided within your course fee.
Who should attend this course?
Adults. Those with ideas that need a 'push', those that want to have fun creating a piece of extravaganza, fans of WOW who would like to make their own creation. No particular skills are required, but it is better to already have a sense of what you'd like to make.
About Beatrice Carlson
10 times finalist of World of Wearable Art and two awards winning entries from 2010 to 2019.
Since 2020, Carlson's work has been translating her WOW concepts to adornment and contemporary jewellery. Carlson is a visual artist using Perspex as her main medium. She is also a printmaker and has a french diploma in fashion design/pattern making. She is now a full time jeweller. The course is about understanding the making process from concept ideas to the creation of a large WOW necklace.
