    Description

    Course fee subsidy

    This course offers a course fee subsidy through funding from the Tertiary Education Commission (TEC) for:  

    • NZ citizens;
    • Those who hold a residency-class visa;
    • Individuals granted refugee status;
    • In some cases spouses of NZ citizens and permanent migrants may also qualify - please contact the office to enquire.

    Conditions:

    • Registrants must be aged 16 years or older.
    • Registrants must not be currently enrolled at a secondary school.
    • You should attend at least 80% of your classes to qualify for a fee subsidy.
    • We need to collect extra information such as age, ethnicity, educational achievement and gender for statistical purposes.
    • You must provide evidence of NZ citizenship, residency or refugee status. 

    If you are unable to meet these conditions, please contact the office to discuss your situation. The subsidised course fee is $15.

    About the course

    This workshop-based course will help you identify your career achievements and present them with the metrics (numbers) recruiters love. You’ll also receive templates to help you write your CV and cover letter, and practical tips to help you use LinkedIn, network and shine in your interviews.

    Course outline

    Writing your CV:

    • What to include and what to leave out
    • How to make your skills and experience stand out
    • How to tease out your achievements from your responsibilities and put metrics on them
    • How to reduce the risk of playing to recruiters’ (un)conscious bias
    • How to keep your CV short and easy to read

     Writing your cover letter:

    • What to include and what to leave out
    • How to make a great first impression
    • How to match your skills and experience to the employer’s needs

     Writing your LinkedIn profile:

    • How to set up and write your profile
    • How to build your network of contacts
    • How to attract recruiters
    • How to keep your profile relevant

    Networking:

    • Why networking matters (and why we all find it hard)
    • How to identify your direct and indirect networks
    • How to approach people in your networks

    Shining in your interviews:

    • What your interviewer is looking for
    • How to make a great first impression
    • How to match your skills and experience with the employers’ needs
    • What to ask (and not ask) when it’s your turn 

    Learning objectives

    At the end of the course you will be able to:

    1. Create a concise, engaging CV that highlights your skills and experience
    2. Identify what you’ve achieved in your career (not just what you’ve done) and put metrics on those achievements
    3. Write a cover letter that matches your skills and experience to what the employer is looking for 
    4. Set up a LinkedIn profile, build your network of contacts, and attract recruiters online
    5. Network more effectively to uncover the 'hidden job market'
    6. Prepare for an interview, with a practical approach that matches your skills and experiences to the questions you're likely to be asked.

    About presenter Kate Thompson

    Kate Thompson has built a corporate career in communications, change management, community engagement and sustainability. She’s also helped many people and communities gain skills, knowledge and access to opportunities through mentoring, training and community development. Kate’s ‘side hustle’ is a career support service which helps people develop the career documents and tools they need to present ‘their best selves’ in the job market.

    What to bring

    A sandwich or packed lunch. We'll provide tea and coffee for breaks. Bring your current CV with you. Be ready to workshop a current or past role (i.e. have a role in mind - role name, employer, dates if applicable, responsibilities). If you currently have a LinkedIn profile, please bring your login details.
